Nutritional Consultation
We have had many requests
from clients for further support with food and diet issues.
In our office Dr. Van Dueck
handles your conditional problems and now I, Susan, am handling your food plans
and general nutritional and lifestyle enquiries.
When I first started, I was
amazed at what people thought was a proper diet.
There were so many people who
truly thought that their diet was quite good but as I studied their eating
habits, I realized that the most people were very confused due to information
overload and misinformation. For example, one gentleman was so sold on ‘low
fat’ that he had cut virtually all fat from his diet….even healthy fat. He
ate almost all carbohydrates because they don’t have fat.
I faced the daunting task of
trying to convince him to add some ‘good’ fat back into his diet. It is very
unhealthy to cut out all fat since it is necessary for optimum health. The irony of this
gentleman’s situation was that he had very high cholesterol and he couldn't
understand why, since he was eating no fat. I tried to help him see that fat is
necessary and the addition of healthy fat to his diet would ultimately improve
his overall health. This was a very difficult case because he had been
thoroughly convinced that ‘low fat’ was the way to eat and although his
health was failing, he had difficulty changing. I am continuing to work with
him and bit by bit we are making progress.

Questionnaires on this website and hopefully this has helped you a little
bit. However, for those of you who would like further help, I am available for
in-person, phone or email consultations. I require participants to keep a record
of their food intake for one week and fill in a lifestyle questionnaire.
From there I analyze your
activity level and eating habits and help you make some livable changes. If you
follow only some of my advice, you will be improving you chances of becoming
healthier.
Food doesn't need to be
boring and tasteless. I am a gourmet cook and love to experiment. My main goal
is to help people find a food plan that they can live with and dispel many of
the myths about what’s healthy and what’s not. If you want to gain or lose
weight, we can work on that too. This is not, however, about weight
management…it is about an ongoing lifestyle change that you can feel good
about and that you can maintain. I don’t believe we should feel guilty about
the odd dessert or treat we may eat. Negative emotions around food are
detrimental. It’s what we do 80-90% of the time that’s important. The little
treats are part of enjoying life. So don’t feel that you can never have a
coffee or a dessert.

around it. This website is a good source of material as it
is continually updated with more information and recipes…so visit it often.
